چکیده

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and algae Chlorella vulgaris on the production of rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. The Brachionus calyciflorus were cultured using four different types of diets: fresh Chlorella vulgaris (T1), yeast with fresh Chlorella vulgaris (T2), powder Chlorella vulgaris with fresh Chlorella vulgaris (T3) and yeast with powder Chlorella vulgaris (T4). We compared these diets to find out their potentiality on the population growth of Brachionus calyciflorus. The rotifers were cultured under natural environmental condition with continuous artificial aeration. Initial density of Brachionus calyciflorus were 8 individuals ml− 1 (ind. ml− 1). Water temperature and pH were measured during the culture period. Among the four different diets the fresh Chlorella vulgaris (T1) and it’s yeast combination (T2) gave satisfactory production of rotifer 73±9 and 67±8 ind. ml, respectively. However, processing of fresh Chlorella vulgaris to produce powder form declined the production ability of rotifer. The diet sample T3 and T4 containing powdered Chlorella vulgaris produced 48±9 and 25±6 ind. ml, respectively. So, the diet in combination of yeast and fresh Chlorella is suggested for the sustainable production of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus.

Effect of different densities of live and dead Chlorella vulgaris on the population growth of rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and Brachionus patulus (Rotifera).

In order to maintain rotifer populations during periods of low algal production, it is necessary to offer alternate diets, some of which include forms of preserved algae. The present work is based on the effect of live and dead Chlorella vulgaris on the population growth of Brachionus calyciflorus and Brachionus patulus. The experimental design consisted of three algal levels (0.5 x 10(6), 1.5 ...

Bioaccumulation of atrazine: effects on population growth and reproduction of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus fed atrazine-exposed microalgae

Little information is known about bioaccumulation of atrazine or the effects it has on consumers that ingest atrazine-contaminated prey. For that reason, freshwater microalgae Chlorella vulgaris cultures were exposed to different concentrations of atrazine for twenty-four hours and were then used as an exclusive food source for Brachionus calyciflorus for three days with the intent to evaluate ...

Use of Copper to Selectively Inhibit Brachionus calyciflorus (Predator) Growth in Chlorella kessleri (Prey) Mass Cultures for Algae Biodiesel Production

A single Brachionus rotifer can consume thousands of algae cells per hour causing an algae pond to crash within days of infection. Thus, there is a great need to reduce rotifers in order for algal biofuel production to become reality. Copper can selectively inhibit rotifers in algae ponds, thereby protecting the algae crop. Differential toxicity tests were conducted to compare the copper sensit...

Combined effect of concentrations of algal food (Chlorella vulgaris) and salt (sodium chloride) on the population growth of Brachionus calyciflorus and Brachionus patulus (Rotifera).

Salinity is an important variable influencing the density and diversity of rotifers. Studies on salt tolerance of rotifers have so far concentrated on euryhaline species while very little information is available on non-euryhaline taxa. In the present work, we have evaluated the combined effects of Chlorella vulgaris and sodium chloride on the population growth of two freshwater rotifers B. cal...
